Pahrump girl, 10 months, dies from strep

A local 10 month-old child is dead from complications of strep throat. Nye County Sheriff’s deputies said the child died last Tuesday.

The Clark County coroner’s office identified the child as Kali Nobles of Pahrump.

Pahrump Valley Fire and Rescue Chief Scott Lewis said crews were summoned to a residence just after 11:30 p.m. “We responded to a report of an unconscious patient where CPR was in progress involving a 10 month-old and the outcome was not favorable,” he said.

Nye County Sheriff’s Sgt. David Boruchowitz said officials at Desert View Hospital confirmed the child’s death this week.

“Dr. Sears from Desert View Hospital confirmed to the NCSO that the cause of death for this child has been determined as complications from strep throat,” Boruchowitz stated in a press release. “Deputies and Pahrump Valley Fire Rescue personnel were not put at medical risk on this call. No public threat hazard exists.”

Nobles’ death raised concerns in the Pahrump community it could have been related to the flu. Henderson kindergartner Kiera Driscoll, 5, died Jan. 20 a few days after contracting the flu. Seven people have died from the flu in Southern Nevada this season, according to the Southern Nevada Health District.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, strep throat is caused by viruses similar to ones that cause a cold or the flu. Group A Streptococcus bacteria can live in a person’s nose and throat.

The bacteria are spread through contact with droplets from an infected person’s cough or sneeze.

Sometimes life-threatening, group “A” strep disease may occur when bacteria get into parts of the body where bacteria usually are not found, such as the blood, muscle, or the lungs. These infections are termed “invasive group A strep disease.”
