Pahrump man arrested in deadly DUI accident in Vegas

A 70-year-old Pahrump man was arrested and booked into the Clark County Detention Center after a fatal DUI crash Saturday in Las Vegas.

Charles H. Washington was arrested on charges of DUI related to death and three counts of DUI related to substantial bodily harm. The 70-year-old Washington was being held in lieu of $300,000 bail as of Tuesday afternoon following the accident that left one child dead and a toddler in serious condition.

Las Vegas police responded just before 3:40 p.m. Saturday to the crash at East Carey Avenue and Sandy Lane where a 2007 Dodge Ram 3500 had rear-ended a 1993 Toyota Corolla, Metro said in a Saturday night press release.

Witness statements and evidence at the scene suggest that the 24-year-old driver of the Corolla, Robert Gonzales, was stopped in an eastbound lane on Carey, just east of Sandy, talking to a pedestrian from inside the car when the Dodge Ram crashed into the back of the car, police said.

Elena Rivera, a 3-year-old Las Vegas girl, was killed in the accident, the Clark County coroner’s office said Monday.

Gonzales, Josefina Sanchez, 34, a 2-year-old girl and Elena were taken to University Medical Center with serious injuries. Elena died at the hospital.

A passenger of the Ram truck ran from the scene after the crash, according to police.
