Sheriff’s G.R.E.A.T summer program wraps up Thursday
Officials with the Nye County Sheriffs Office are urging parents to bring their kids to Petrack Park for the final day of the Gang Resistance Education And Training (G.R.E.A.T) summer program on Thursday morning.
Deputy Summer Danneker said the program is an opportunity for children from kindergarten to the eighth grade to enjoy games, physical activities, win prizes, and build leadership and social skills.
Lunch is will be provided and there is no cost to attend.
She reminded parents to bring sunscreen and a water bottle for their child.
If any kids are bored, they can come on down this week through Thursday, from 9 a.m. till about 1:30 p.m., she said. We have a lot of different activities and summer games for the outdoors. We have water games and kickball, so it definitely wears the kids out. We also have water balloons and water fights.
On Monday, the turnout appeared to be on the light side.
Danneker said that may be due to a change in venue and the method of registration.
We used to hold this at Ian Deutch Memorial Park, she said. Pre-registration is done online at nyecountysheriff.com. Just click on the Great Summer Games and register your kid and bring them on down to have a great time and a lot of fun. Lunch is provided by the Nye County School District.
Danneker also said if parents have problems registering online, they can just come to the park and register in person.
In existence for more than 10 years, Danneker said the summer program is fully supported by sheriffs office officials.
Its a program that the sheriff is definitely in support of and would like to continue, she said. Were just here to help the kids stay out of trouble and have a lot of fun throughout the summer. They also learn about great teamwork, leadership skills and overall have a fun and healthy set of activities when they are away from the house.
Pahrump is the final community within the Nye County School District for the summer program.
Last month the communities of Gabbs, Round Mountain and Tonopah wrapped up their respective programs.
Amargosa Valley, Beatty and Pahrump finish up this month.
