UNLV School of Medicine proposal boosted

Clark County commissioners on Tuesday approved two deals aimed at helping medical education in Southern Nevada, including the development of the UNLV School of Medicine in Las Vegas.

Officials signed off on a memorandum of understanding with the Board of Regents of the Nevada System of Higher Education and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, that reserves the county’s property at 625 Shadow Lane for development of the school of medicine. The county property, at the southeast corner of Shadow Lane and Pinto Lane, is the former site of the health district.

Commissioners also approved a lease deal that will allow University Medical Center to lease real estate to the medical school.

Under the agreement, UMC will lease 8,610 square feet at 2231 W. Charleston Blvd. to the school of medicine. The one-year lease has no rent for its first year. After the first year ends and if the lease is extended, the rent would be $15,067.50 a month. The school will relocate its internal medicine and surgery resident clinics to the space.

The Board of Regents plans to vote on the agreement Friday.
