Game Day: Trojans vs. Eagles

The Pahrump Valley Trojans will take on the Boulder City Eagles today at Boulder City. The Trojans will be away this week and next, against Mojave.

The Trojans won their second opening game of the year in a 40-7 rout of the Division I Bengals last week. The Trojans will attack Boulder with a strong running game that uses a Jet Sweep Offense. Their offense utilizes quick backs using motion and multiple looks. Basically, how the Jet works is if the defense stops one runner, and then the Trojans attack from a different direction, using another runner, but the formation maybe the same.

Last week the Trojans started off with Keenan Harris, a 10.5 runner of the 100 meter. Harris was featured in the first two series against Bonanza, ran for 111 yards, scored one touchdown and set up another. When he was stopped Jeremiah England, the 245-pound tight end ran for 56 yards. England not only scored two rushing touchdowns but also scored one through the air.

The Trojans had seven rushers who compiled 244 yards by the end of the game. This opened up the pass for the Trojans. Trojans Coach Joe Clayton said Milk was off in the first half but he got some rhythm in the second half and threw for 66 yards.

Boulder City will come at the Trojans with a well-disciplined team and a double-wing formation.

Boulder City brings back senior Trent Carmell as quarterback. Last year the Trojans came within 6 points of a victory and lost 14 to 8 despite having more yards offensively than the Eagles, 237-213.

During that game Carmell threw for 81 yards and the Eagles ran for 131. Clayton felt his team did a good job of shutting down the Eagles last year and believes his team can do it again.

Against Clark last week the Eagles had trouble running the ball with Carmell getting most of the yards with 67. The Eagles offense posted just 84-yards rushing against Clark. Carmell threw for 153 yards against the Chargers. The poor offensive showing resulted in a Clark victory, 26-22. This means this will be a true test for the Trojans defensive backs who stopped Bonanza from gaining big yards through the air and even came up with one interception by John Clark.

The Eagles graduated two veteran backs last year, Xavier Steel and Sam Woodbury. Combined, the two rushed for just under 1,000 yards. Against Clark, none of the backs rushed over 10 yards.

If the Trojans defense can put pressure on Carmell and force him to run, the Trojans should be fine. During the Bonanza game, the Trojans proved they had the speed on the line to pressure the quarterback. The Eagles appear to be about the same size as the Trojans, but will they have the speed? Look for the Trojans defensive ends, Jeremiah England and Jeremy Coates to have some sacks on Friday night.

This will be a non-conference game for the Trojans. This week look for the Trojans to be successful with the run and in the air. Trojans will win the game 28-7.
