Trojans down Mojave; ready for Faith lutheran today

Senior Lauren Koenig and sophomore Evandy Murphy both went 4-5 on Monday to help the Trojans overpower Mojave 13-3.

The game showed what the Trojans could do if they could string those hits together, blasting the Rattlers for 17 hits in 7 innings.

Freshman outfielder Jessica Pearson also bunted the ball down the third base line to squeeze home Andi Bishop.

The Rattlers (9-8 overall, 5-7 Sunset League) were unable to score after a 3-run first inning. Krista Toomer was the winning pitcher for Pahrump, going the distance.

Trojans coach Eli Armendariz said the win also demonstrated what his defense could do.

“I like my middle infield,” he said. “Stobbe (Jackie) at shortstop and Murphy (Evandy) at second are looking good. I don’t have to worry about it like last year. And with Andi Bishop in centerfield, we are really consistent.”

The win insures that Pahrump will be at least the fourth seed in the zone playoffs, which starts next week on Tuesday.

According to Armendariz, the Trojans can do better than fourth if they beat third place seed Faith Lutheran (22-7, 9-3) today at 3:30 p.m.

This will be the last time the Trojans face the Crusaders in a conference game because next year Faith Lutheran is moving to Class 4 (now currently Division I). In their first meeting of the season with the Crusaders, the Trojans lost by a score of 12-0.

Armendariz said today’s game will be different.

“We are going to play today’s game like a playoff game,” he said. “We are hitting them, not like last year.”

Armendariz just wants his kids to put the hits together and he thinks he can beat this team.

“We will rest Amaya Mendoza for the playoffs today and use Adrianna Sandoval for her off-speed pitching,” he said.

Sandoval, a freshman, pitched a perfect game against Clark on April 20.
