Beatty rolls over Trona

In their second outing of the season, Beatty baseball in non-league play rolled over Trona (California) 9-2, led by the hitting of senior Hugo Mendoza and Fabian Perez, who each had a double.

Hornets (2-1 Class 1A Central League) coach Leo Verzilli said their hitting has improved.

“Since the first outing, we have improved a lot,” he said. “We need more work on the base running. We had a guy on second and the third strike was called, but the catcher dropped the ball and so he threw to first for the out. Our runner just watched, but should have been halfway home. The guys just need more experience because we have a lot of kids that just never played the game before.”

Junior Armando Gonzalez pitched four innings against Trona, struck out six and allowed three hits and one run.

“Gonzalez did a great job of pitching, throwing 71 pitches,” Verzilli said. “He is our ace pitcher and is primarily a fastball pitcher.”

Mendoza pitched three innings, striking out eight and allowing two runs.

The coach said Gonzalez pitched two solid innings against Pahrump in the end and looked good.

The coach said they played a practice game against the Pahrump junior varsity, beating them 11-9, and then have been scrimmaging more just to get the added experience.

“At the end of practice we will scrimmage to get the added game situations,” Verzilli said.

The team traveled to Beaver Dam (1-4 Class 1A Southern League) on Tuesday, which was past deadline.

“Beaver Dam (in Arizona) usually has a good team every year. They are not in our league so I will play my younger players during the first game. We will play a doubleheader against them and I will be able to play the starters the second game.

Verzilli said the teams to beat in his league will be Tonopah (2-5) and Round Mountain (1-8).

“Those two schools always come out with good teams every year,” he said.

Beatty’s league, known as the Class 1A Central League, consists of Tonopah, Round Mountain and Spring Mountain.
