Richard Stephens / Special to the Pahrump Valley Times - Robby Revert makes contact in a recent home game for Beatty. The Hornets have a losing record, but Hornets Coach Leo Verzilli believes the team is improving and learning with each game.

Beatty baseball was home last Friday in a doubleheader with Round Mountain where the Hornets dropped two games 14-4 and 10-1. On Tuesday, Beatty traveled to Pahranagat Valley and played two more games and posted two more losses 23-2 and 18-4.

The team is looking forward to playing a team they know they can beat and that is the Adelson Lions next Tuesday.

For Hornets Coach Leo Verzilli, it is not all about the scores. He knew from day one that his team was in a building year.

“Adelson will be one game so we can pitch our best guys. We will work in some of the younger guys on Thursday (rescheduled Beaver Dam). Our kids have made improvements across the board in fielding knowledge of the game. Hitting is our biggest challenge followed by consistent throws. Everything is getting better, but we are not at varsity levels yet,” he said.

Beatty will probably finish at the bottom of the conference.

The battle for the top of the division continues just north of Beatty. The next couple of weeks will tell how strong the Tonopah ball club really is as they play teams from the top of the division. The Muckers play Round Mountain at home and then on May 2 they will play Alamo followed by Indian Springs to close out the season.

Tonopah has played some great ball recently, smearing Sandy Valley by scoring 36 runs in two games, but their last 3 conference games have been the bottom of the conference. They have gotten to the top with good pitching and great hitting. They are undefeated in league play after six games.

Tonopah’s last three conference games are with teams that have either won a state title or have won the conference in the recent past.
