Trojans bats prove too much for Western

Lady Trojans prevailed over Western on Tuesday 13-3. The Pahrump (6-3 overall, 1-0 Sunset League) bats were hot and never let up. The winning pitcher for the Trojans was Aryana Cuellar, who pitched 3.1 innings. Amaya Mendoza gets the save with 1.2 innings pitched.

Trojans coach Elias Armendariz said he has solid pitching, but the team still needs to tighten up the defense. Case in point, the girls had 6 errors against the Warriors.

“My defense is hurting my pitching,” he said.” We’re just not making the plays and this will continue to hurt us if we don’t change.”

Western had five hits, three runs and one error. They got one run in the first and two in the fourth.

In the fourth, they could have gotten more. There was a controversial play at second where Pahrump’s shortstop Jill Smith caught the ball away from second and applied a tag to the sliding Warrior, Alexis Maeoki.

The umpire called her out, but Western coaches argued Smith missed the tag. This helped put an end to a Western rally where possibly more runs could have been scored.

The Trojans’ hitting was sound with the girls scoring two in the first, three in the third, two in the fourth and six in the fifth on nine hits. The game was called in the fifth because of the 10-run mercy rule.

The girls hit three home runs in the game. Two were hit by Jordan Egan over the fence and one of those were home runs hit by Amaya Mendoza, which was also over the fence.

Armendariz said he will be looking for solutions this Saturday against Desert Pines. He will be bringing up some JV players for the defense.
