Trojans track runs hard at Las Vegas Classic

The Trojans track team ran against Faith Lutheran, Boulder City, Virgin Valley and Pahranagat Valley last week Wednesday and was at Desert Oasis for the Las Vegas Classic on Saturday.

At Faith Lutheran, the Pahrump boys came in third place with 72 points, Faith Lutheran was first with 125.5, Boulder City was in second with 116 points, Virgin Valley came in fourth with 56.5 and Pahranagat Valley came in fifth with 2 points.

The Trojans girls team came in third with 70 points, Faith Lutheran was first with 167 points, Boulder City had 74 points, Virgin Valley was fourth with 47 points and Pahranagat Valley was in fifth with 1 point.

For the boys at Faith Lutheran, Bryce Odegard took second in the 1,600-meter run (4 minutes 54.23 seconds). He was also first in the 3,200-meter run (10: 20.4).

In the 110-meter hurdles, Dylan Montgomery took second (15.50).

In the field events, Nico Cipollini had a first place in the pole vault (11 feet 3 inches).

Riley Sutton took first place in the triple jump (35-09).

Not having Keenan Harris, who won’t be returning and not having Isaac Davis has hurt the Trojan boys because of the lack of depth.

Davis should return soon to the lineup.

The girls track team scored two less points at Faith Lutheran.

Kelbie Middleton had a second in the 100 (12.41) and took first in the 200 (25.48).

Sydney Dennis took second in the 400 (1:05.9).

In the 100 hurdles, Meghan McDermott raced to a second place (17.15) and she also took second in the 300 hurdles (52.03).

Pahrump’s 800-meter relay took second (11:48.62) and is composed of Fenny Descuatan, Jayvanna Descuatan, Sydney Dennis and Alicia Quiroz.

In field events, shotputter Caleli Havel threw a 77-03 for third place. Annabelle Brophy took third in the high jump (4-04).

Meghan McDermott took second place in the long jump (15-09) and a first in the triple jump (31-00).

At the Las Vegas Classic, the boys and girls competed against 28 schools. Only part of the team qualified for this meet.

Trojans Coach Wes Icard thought things went well.

“Considering we only took a handful of athletes, we did well,” he said.

The team walked away with three first place medals and two fourth place medals.

The boys took a first place in the freshman 1,600. Bryce Odegard got a personal best (4:43.51) for the freshman finals and was only 10 seconds off the school record.

Icard said Middleton had great race in the 200 and won by just a 100th of a second (25.52) in the 200.

“It was an exciting race to watch,” he said.

She also had a fourth place in the 100 meter (12.54). In the 100 hurdles, Meghan McDermott took fourth (16.79).

Sydney Dennis also had a personal best running in the freshman 1,600. She captured first place (5:45.19).

“She ran a good time, if she was pushed harder she would run faster. Dennis doesn’t like to lose,” Icard said. “Putting people on the relay teams is a struggle,” he said. “I want the athletes to do well in their stronger events, but I also want to have a good relay team. It’s hard because we don’t have a lot of athletes.”

In addition, the team had some injuries on the girls side. Vaniah Vito is out with an ankle injury. On the boys side the team might get back Nick Nelson for distance.
