Officials approve changes to land use regarding multi-pets

The Pahrump Regional Planning Commission approved changes recently to Nye County Code Title 17 Comprehensive Land Use Planning and Zoning, following the recent amendments to Nye County Code Title 6 that governs the animal control ordinance.

Officials recently eliminated tier I and tier II multi-pet permits from Title 6. Currently, a multi-pet permit allows keeping 11 or more dogs or cats or a combination thereof on one property.

The proposed change would allow up to five animals without a permit, a multi-pet permit tier I with a permit from animal control and in suburban estates and rural estates residential zones with 1-and-2-acre minimum parcel sizes with a conditional use permit, according to Nye County Planning Department Director Darrell Lacy.

A multi-pet tier II would only be allowed in rural homestead residential with a conditional use permit.

Under a multi-pet permit, dogs trained for search and rescue or service animals shall not be counted toward the number of dogs and cats for the purposes of multi-pet permits. No permit is required for up to five animals.

The previous multi-pet permit tier I allowed from six to 10 dogs and cats on one residential property, whereas multi-pet permit tier II allowed 10 or more cats and dogs on one residential property.

The approved changes will apply only to Pahrump, the only town in Nye County that has a Regional Planning Commission and zoning regulations.
