Celebration continues into the weekend

Pahrump residents have been enjoying events surrounding Independence Day since Wednesday when the town of Pahrump kicked of its festivities with the first Movie in the Park.

“Brave,” an animated production, was shown on the inflatable screen set up in Petrack Park. The movie was a precursor to the Liberty Fest held Thursday.

• Tomorrow at 4 p.m., festivities start again at the Pahrump Nugget. This time there will be games for the kids, a bounce house, a beer truck and a pool bar, a live DJ and eating contests which will run from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The fireworks show will be at 9 p.m.

• Off 160 Coffee House is hosting a Reggae Blues Fest from 6 p.m. to midnight at 1330 S. Highway 160 next to Saddle West.

Stan Rankin, owner of Caribbean Lifestyles, is from Jamaica and will be performing. The show is suitable for all ages.

There will be crafts and Jamaican jerk chicken for sale. Call 764-1197 for more information.

• With the launch of Movies in the Park on Wednesday, residents can expect those events to continue every Saturday beginning July 13.

The rest of the movies will be shown at Ian Deutch Memorial Park, not Petrack Park.

On the schedule are:

July 13 — Spiderman;

July 20 — Life of Pi;

July 27 — Skyfall;

Aug. 3 — Hotel Transylvania;

Aug. 10 — Avengers;

Aug. 17 — Boom; and

Aug. 24 — Dark Knight Rises.

The shows will begin at dusk. The town has set a few rules. The event is non-smoking and drug free. No alcohol is permitted and because concessions are available in the park on movie nights, leave the coolers at home.

According to Parks and Recreation Director Matt Luis, the films cost the town about $900 each, by the time the equipment is leased and set up and the rights to show the films are purchased.

“This is something the town does for the community and we hope they come out to support it,” Luis said.

A nonprofit will sell the concessions. For more information, call 727-5107.
