Beatty track runs hard at White Pine

Beatty track was at the White Pine Invitational last weekend. This was the second to last meet before the regional meet.

For the Beatty men’s team, Enrique Orozco continues to post great times in the 800-meter run and the 1,600- meter run. Orozco posted a 2:12 in the 800 to capture overall 1st place at the meet.

Although the Beatty women’s team finished ahead of most of the Division IV teams, it didn’t post the usual results in the field events. Beatty High School said prom might have had something to do with it. To repeat as state champions, the women will need great performances by jumper Christina Thompson, who has jumped over 15 feet in the long jump and the team will need to score in the pole vault and high jump.

At the moment, no other distance runners can compare to Beatty’s Jasmin Pelayo and the Pimentel sisters. Pelayo finished second in the 1,600 meter with a 6:10.55 time and Zuri Pimentel finished fifth with a 6:19.04 time.

At White Pine, the Lady Hornets continued to compete in sprinting. Alexi Gil and Vanessa Gamboa would have taken second and third if they were strictly at a Division IV meet. Hornets coach Jerry Adcox knows this too. He also knows that his sprinters may not do well every meet but at state they just need to score points.

Tonopah sprinter Sara Zane may have a 13.2 personal best, but Gil and Gamboa are not far behind at (13.7). Zane did not run the 100 meter. Megan Damele (12.65) from Eureka took the 100-meter dash at White Pine for Eureka, which is a northern Division IV team.

Other Nye County Division IV teams had a good showing at the White Pine Invitational on Saturday. The Tonopah men’s track took fourth place with (61.5) with Beatty coming in seventh place (31) and Round Mountain in eighth place (25).

The Men’s side was won by Division III White Pine (181.5), who was also the host team. Second place went to Lincoln County (95) and third went to Battle Mountain (94).

On the women’s side two Division III teams took first and second, White Pine (217.5) and Andre Agassi came in second with (91.5). Eureka, a Division IV team, took third. Beatty took fourth place (42.5) in a tie with Jack Pot. Tonopah took ninth place (25) and Round Mountain took 10th (21).

Tonopah is gearing up for a good showing in state. The men’s team has strong sprinters and should do well. The women’s team has Zane and Ashley Gray (shot put). Both teams lack the depth to threaten Beatty’s chances at a state title, but they could get a few individual championships.

The Tonopah boys were fourth with 61.5 points and the girls took ninth with 25 points.

Muckers sprinter, Scott May took the first place in the 100 meters with a time of 11.09 and was seventh (23.18) in the 200 meters.

The 4x100-meter relay team (Vinny Bagarose, May, Bob Hunt and Jim Withers) took second with a time of 47.03.

The 4x200-meter relay team (Bagarose, Brendan Eason, May and Withers) were first with a time of 1:40.34.

The best shot put thrower of the Muckers was Manuel Covell-Linares, who was third with a distance of 38-08.50.

Tyler Kirkland took the third place (5-02) in the high jump in a tie with Jason Nelson, JJ Fikes, Jesse Petersen (White Pine), Tristan Otteson and Withers (Tonopah).

In 110-meter hurdles, Tyler Kirkland and Kammren Henderson were fourth and fifth with times of 20.54 and 21.25, respectively (at an invitational teams score out to 10th place).

On the girls side, senior Ashley Gray was 2nd in shot put with a distance of 31-03.50 and took 3rd in the discus with a 88-08 throw. Gray was second to Morgan Manley of Round Mountain in the shot put.

In 100-meter hurdles, Megan Thackeray took 6th (20.92) followed by Elle Snyder (21.01).

The 4x100-meter relay team (Vicky Dennis, Jessie Vaculin, Thackeray and Snyder) took the 6th place with a time of 1:05.80.

The next meet for the Muckers will be today in Boulder City.
