[PAHRUMP’S FUTURE]

FRIDAY, MAY 22

Approximately 244 of the best and brightest of the town’s future will receive their high school diplomas at the high school football field starting at 8 p.m. Beatty High is holding a similar ceremony at 7 p.m. in the school’s gymnasium for its 13 graduates. (see story page 1).

FRIDAY, MAY 22 - SUNDAY, MAY 24

The annual Jim Butler Days and Nevada Mining Championships return to Tonopah for Memorial Day weekend. Dirt track races, parade down Main Street, tours of the mining museum, music, wine tasting and children’s events are just part of the events taking place 167 miles north of Pahrump. Named for the miner who started the silver boom in northern Nye County (see story page 12).

FRIDAY, May 22 & SATURDAY, MAY 23

Pahrump’s own Three Blind Mice will be making the rounds this weekend playing two shows at two different locations. The three-piece combo will take the stage Friday 8 p.m. at The Hubb Bar & Saloon, 3720 W. Bell Vista Ave. The band takes the stage Saturday starting at 7 p.m. at Paddy’s Pub, 1700 S. Pahrump Valley Blvd. Covers range from Van Halen to Queen to Kiss and everything in between.

SATURDAY, MAY 23

An ice cream social and bake sale to benefit the fundraising efforts for Boogie Shakers Crunch Strides will be from noon to 3 p.m. at the VFW Post, 4651 Homestead Road. Baked goods, jewelry, ice cream, root beer floats, sundaes and banana splits will be available. The money goes towards Relay for Life cancer research.

[Memorial Day]

MONDAY, MAY 25

Local resident and retired U.S. Marine Major Tim Callahan will be the featured guest speaker at G.G. Sweet Memorial Park in observance of Memorial Day. The park is located at 1081 Gamebird Road. The service is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Callahan served at the Pentagon during the 9/11 attacks.

The Knit Wits crochet and knitting group meets every Wednesday at 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Pahrump Library, 701 East Street. The group is always looking for more enthusiasts to join their circle.

Pahrump area Assemblyman James Oscarson is hosting a conference with Nevada Legislators as the final weeks of the 2015 Legislature begin. The public is invited to sit in and ask questions. The event is from 3:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Hafen Building, 1321 S. Highway 160, #5.

The Model A Club meets on the fourth Thursday of each month at 6 p.m. at the Elks Lodge, Basin Lodge, 2220 E. Basin Ave. The club is open to everyone who has an interest in the Model A, not just owners of the vintage car.

The Nye County Commission will hammer out the final details of the county’s budget for the fiscal year starting July 1. The hearing will be teleconferenced at 10 a.m. to the commission chambers, 2100 E. Walt Williams Drive, or watch online at nyecounty.net. Additional service cuts, across-the-board cuts to departments and hiring freezes are all on the table as the county struggles to balance the budget.

GALLERY: How Pahrump marked Juneteenth

Several members of the community met at the Black Cow’s open-mic session on Wednesday evening, followed by a candlelight vigil at the corner of Highway 160 and Basin Avenue in the Petrack Park parking lot. Hymns and songs of freedom were sung by the group to mark Juneteenth in Pahrump for the fourth year since President Joe Biden signed the nation’s newest holiday into law in 2021.

95-year-old grand marshal shares the secret to his longevity

More than 40 friends and family celebrated Emil Janssen’s 95th birthday on Saturday, June 8 at the Pahrump Senior Center. The co-founder of Pahrump Family Mortuary will serve as grand marshal for this year’s Fourth of July parade in Pahrump, and says the secret to his longevity is simple.
