Wild horse adoption set for Tonopah rodeo grounds

TONOPAH — A wild horse adoption event is planned from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sept. 24 at the Tonopah Rodeo Grounds.

About 20 recently gathered weanlings and yearlings will being offered for adoption, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management announced.

A preview of the available horses is planned from noon to 5 p.m. Sept. 23 at the Rodeo Grounds, the BLM said in its news release.

All horses available for adoption, the BLM said, will be vaccinated, dewormed and Coggins tested, which involves checking for an animal disease.

Its Tonopah Field Office is holding the event, which is in conjunction with the Stone Cabin wild horse gather.

About 325 wild horses are being gathered from within the Stone Cabin Herd Management Area, 38 miles east of Tonopah in Nye County, the BLM said.

The effort started earlier this month.

About 115 wild horses, mostly weaned foals and yearlings, are being removed from the range, and approximately 210 of the captured wild horses will be released, the BLM said.

Of the horses released, the BLM said that roughly 110 will be mares treated with a fertility control vaccine.
