Cross country sends 14 runners to the regionals

Cross country had the division finals last week and the boys and girls both finished in third to Faith Lutheran and Clark. Both teams did their best said Trojans Coach Matt Kolocdzieczyk.

“Clark and Faith both have strong programs so I was expecting a third place finish,” he said.

In the divisional meet, Bryce Odegard finished in third, with a time of 17:19.5 and Layron Sonerholm finished in 19th with a time of 18:55.8.

For the girls, Fenny Descuatan finished seventh with a time of 22:55.3 and Alicia Quiroz was 12th with a time of 23:32.

The coach said the divisional race determined who he was sending to the regional race which was yesterday and past deadline. Each team can send 10 names, of those 10, three runners are alternates.

At the Division I-A Regional Meet for the boys team, the following ran on Thursday: Bryce Odegard, Layron Sonerholm, Ulisses Perez, Stephen Thelaner, Joseph Zarabozo, Morgan Adams and Wesley Warren. The alternates for the boys were Dylan Montgomery and Curtis Price.

The following girls ran at the regional meet: Fenny Descuatan, Alicia Quiroz, Amber Skilling, Shiloa Gulden, Elizabeth Anderson, Leann Soriano and Daville Ansick. The alternates for the girls were Ashley Floyd and Michela Cimaglia.

The coach said on paper his team should finish fourth at the regionals. The top three teams will go as a team and then it’s the top five runners from non-qualifying teams that will go to state.

“I think for the guys we are looking at fourth place and for the girls fourth or fifth. We are trying to push them up to the third spot. Anything can happen to the other team. Someone could have a bad start or a school can be late like Clark was last year and miss the race altogether. SECTA will be the team to beat.” he said.

As far as individuals going to state, Kolocdzieczyk thinks Odegard and Sonerholm will go for the guys and for the girls, Descuatan has a good chance.
