Golf: Pahrump takes second at home match
The Pahrump Valley boys golf team played a league match at Mountain Falls against Faith Lutheran.
The Crusaders came in first, carding a 386. Pahrump came in second with a 436 and Clark carded a 547 for third.
Sophomore Austen Ancell led his team with a 5-over par 77. He was one stroke shy of the lead golfer for Faith Lutheran, Trenton May.
Ancell was brilliant and shot two birdies in the competition, but also had two double bogeys, which he wasn’t pleased with.
“Both were on the front nine,” he said. “The first one was on hole three and I hit it out of bounds. That one I was hoping would be a bogey. Then on hole eight I shanked it into the water.”
Ancell said he will have to make less mistakes this season to compete with Charlie Magruder, the top Faith Lutheran golfer.
“Charlie is a great golfer,” Ancell said. “When he does make a mistake it usually is not a big one.”
Ancell said this aspect of Magruder’s game can drive other golfers crazy but it doesn’t bother him as much anymore because he has played with him so much.
Ancell said he played with Clark’s George Kim on Monday, who also carded a 77.
“When I play with better golfers it makes me more aggressive of a player,” he said. “Kim made me think and play better on Monday.”
Pahrump is moving up. All last year Pahrump finished in third to Clark and now the team is routinely taking second place.
Ancell was excited about his team doing well as a whole.
“The scores as a team have been coming down,” he said.
His teammates also did well too. Derrick Moore carded an 82, Canen Hastings a 91, Drake Asuncion shot a 93 and so did Mike Hildebrand. Kelby Lindberg shot a 98.
