Annual CASA crab fest returns to valley

There’s both good news and bad news regarding Saturday’s 6th annual Crab Fest, benefitting Pahrump’s Pioneer Territory CASA organization.

The event is sold out after selling 175 tickets at $65 each.

Even still, CASA Publicity Chair Tonya Brum said folks can still reserve a spot for next year’s event.

“It is so popular that we are pretty much sold out,” she said. “Unfortunately, you can’t walk up to the door because we have to order the crab ahead of time so they will know if how much crab to order. People can still donate to Pioneer Territory CASA, and they can also call to make reservations for next year. The capacity for this year’s event was 175.”

The event is a fundraiser for the CASA organization.

CASA stands for Court Appointed Special Advocates, who represent children in the foster care system as well as custody cases.

For those who secured a seat at the table on Saturday, Brum said all will be treated to servings of Dungeness crab from the Pacific Northwest, as well as side dishes.

“The crab is actually flown in that very day,” she said. “There will also be coleslaw and beans as well. For those who don’t want crab, we have chicken for them and a dessert for all. After everyone has been served, there will be platters of crab legs so people can get more or they can actually buy what’s left over to take home with them.”

Brum also sought to give thanks to the person responsible for initiating the annual crab fest.

“We have to give many thanks to Brian Kunzi, who actually brought this to CASA six years ago,” she said. “Brian regularly volunteers his time by working with several local organizations in the community. This is one of the most fun events that we do throughout the year. It’s really a blast and a half.”

Along with the crab feast, raffles and a live auction are part of the evening.

“Our auctioneer Ski Censke is always there and he does the live auction,” she said. “We have our famous Crab Net filled with $1,000 in gift cards that can be used in Pahrump and Las Vegas. We do that in lieu of our 50/50 raffle. We’ve got a bunch of different sponsors for this event. Everybody knows about this because it such a fun event.”
