A man arrested for over 80 counts in October was formally charged last month.
Michael John Dube, Pahrump, was charged with 83 counts – 81 felony, 2 misdemeanor – by the Nye County District Attorney on April 19, stemming from an incident that occurred on October 9, mostly involving identity theft and credit card fraud.
The vast amount of charges included 66 counts of obtaining/using personal identifying information of another person to harm or impersonate the person, 14 counts of possessing a credit/debit card or identifying information without owner’s consent and possession of a controlled substance.
Several credit card bills in other people’s names from places like Macy’s, Home Depot and Chase were among the documents found, in addition to mortgage statements, welfare statements and credit card applications in other people’s names.
Dube was traveling southbound on Highway 160 with his wife and two minor children, when a Nevada Highway Patrol trooper noticed the vehicle he was driving had no visible license plate, according the the arrest report.
When asked for his license and registration Dube could not produce the documents requested.
After obtaining Dube’s name from him, the trooper discovered he had a warrant for possessing a dangerous weapon. The officer ordered Dube out of the vehicle and asked if he consented to a weapons search, which he declined.
Due to the warrant for a dangerous weapon the trooper informed Dube that he would be conducting the search despite his denial.
After being placed in handcuffs in order for the officer to search Dube, he informed the officer that he had a pipe in his pocket and a baggie on his person, police said.
The trooper discovered a credit card that wasn’t in his name, a glass pipe and a baggie containing a white substance that appeared to be methamphetamines, according to law enforcement.
Dube then informed one of the officers to retrieve a Marlboro bag out of his car, which he did and discovered personal and financial documents belonging to several people.
When questioned about the documents Dube told the trooper that he got them after a request by a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police officer, as he said he was a witness to a murder and the documents he had could prove his roommates were involved in fraud.
Dube was taken into custody and transported to the Nye County Detention Center, where it was learned that one of the arresting officers spoke with the Metro officer in question and he did not corroborate his story.
