The Pahrump Valley is about to lose a banking branch.
The One Nevada Credit Union, located at 280 South Highway 160, Suite 2-3, is set to close on Oct. 29. The closure is attributed to declining branch usage according the the company.
Although the local branch will cease operations, they explained that customers can still resume banking operations with One Nevada via Internet.
“About 70 percent of our members don’t even mention a branch these days,” said Greg Barnes, One Nevada Credit Union senior vice president of marketing. “Most of our membership has transitioned to using their smartphone, or their tablet to do the majority of their transactions.
“People just don’t come to branches like they used to. The business at that location has declined to where it’s not sustainable to keep it open.”
Online and mobile banking channels allow anyone to conduct their daily banking activities including depositing checks via the mobile app, account management, bill pay, and transferring funds.
The high number of the elderly population in Pahrump isn’t a concern to Barnes as far as mobile banking goes as the company has seen a surge in users in the over 55-year-old sector.
“Our membership in the older demographics are some of the ones that have the fastest growing segment of our online users,” he said. “We see that with the adoption of online making and mobile banking. The younger folk have adopted that stuff for some time, and you see it know with some of our older membership getting on board with the newest technology.”
One Nevada customers can also conduct business via ATM machines in Pahrump through four surcharge-free units available through the Allpoint Network.
Barnes said closures are something that will become increasingly more frequent, as technology is making it easier for anyone to conduct all their banking needs from home.
“We are always re-evaluating our branch options,” Barnes said. “What we see in the future with the banking industry as a whole is a lot of consolidation, a lot of branch closings … again because the people are doing the majority of their transactions online.”
With the closure, the closest branch location is 51 miles out of town, at 4840 Blue Diamond Road, Suite 100 in southwest Las Vegas.
All employees at the branch will be offered positions within the company, if they so choose to stay with the company.
