Ancell earns post-season golf honor

Pahrump Valley sophomore golfer Austen Ancell was named to the Division I-A All-Southern Region first team after his surprising win at the state tournament in May.

The boy he beat, Boulder City golfer Luke Logan, was named the Division I-A Southern Region Player of the Year by league coaches.

Logan capped his impressive senior season by capturing a fourth consecutive region title on May 6 at Siena Golf Club, before losing the state title to Ancell by two strokes.

Logan, a North Idaho College signee, also led the All-Southern Region first team.

Ancell and Logan were joined on the first team by Faith Lutheran’s Charlie Magruder and Dallas Haun; Moapa Valley’s Jacob Causey; and Sierra Vista’s George Kim.

Faith Lutheran’s Mark Cheney took home the region’s Coach of the Year honors.

Pahrump Valley teammate junior Derrek Moore was named to the All-Sunset League second-team by coaches.

Ancell carded a two-day 150 to win the Division I-A state golf tournament held May 11-12 in Truckee, California.

According to Trojans golf coach Robert Hopkins, Ancell is Pahrump Valley’s first golf state champion.
