Football: Pahrump falls to Del Sol on its home turf

Del Sol took a 14-3 halftime lead and then hung on for the 14-11 win in front of a Trojans home crowd on Friday.

The game came down to the last two minutes. Pahrump (1-1 overall Sunset League) had eight chances to win within the 10-yard line but couldn’t punch the ball into the end zone thanks to a great goal-line stand from the Dragons (2-0 overall, Sunrise League) defense.

Kicker Joey Sladek had made a 42-yard field goal kick earlier in the game and he had made a 29-yarder in the previous game. So a kick so close to the goal line should have been within his range, providing everything went well.

“We held and they got in position to kick a field goal to go to overtime,” Del Sol coach Gary Maki described to the Las Vegas Sun. “They had a bad snap and couldn’t capitalize.”

The Del Sol defense also caused five turnovers, which helped them hold on.

Both sides had a lot of penalties called on them. Del Sol told the Las Vegas Sun that the score was misleading because they had two touchdowns called back due to penalties on the field. The Dragons had 135 yards in penalties.

Trojans junior running back, Nico Velazquez, had an 18-yard touchdown run on offense and an interception on defense.

The Trojans will travel to Boulder City (1-1 overall, Sunrise League) for a 7 p.m game on Friday.
