Lady Trojans basketball routs Bonanza team

The Lady Trojans won one and lost one, but oh what a win it was on Monday night. The Trojans defense shut down Bonanza for a 47-17 win in a non-league game.

The Pahrump defense held the Bonanza team to just five points at the half.

This win made up for the close loss to Tech on Friday night where the Trojans lost 38-41.

“We were angry about not getting that win on Friday,” senior Bethany Calvert said about the win. “We really wanted that win and we came back and we showed it today that we will come back and not accept losing like that.”

In that loss, Tech went to the line 41 times.

Trojans coach Bob Hopkins said only one thing about the game on Friday.

“It’s hard to win when the other team has 41 free-throw shots,” the coach said.

After Monday’s game he was in a much better mood.

“I don’t know if you can ever make up for a loss, but I was very happy with the way we played last night,” he said. “Defense was better and the rebounding was way better than on Friday night against Tech. We were able to play 12 kids in the first half and 12 in the second half. We seem to be improving every game so we just hope it continues.”

In the Tech game the defense kept the girls close and if you take away the free throws from Tech, the Lady Trojans won.

In the Bonanza game, Calvert sank two three-point shots in the first half to charge up her teammates to get them going. The Trojans (4-4, Sunset League) scored 22 points in the first half and 25 in the second.

“I felt really good about my shooting tonight,” Calvert said. “I came out and hit a couple and I just like to do that and get my teammates going and they start hitting them too.”

She said she felt good about her shooting but apparently the rest of the team did too.

“I think that what really came through this game is that we got it around the court and I think everyone on the team scored tonight,” she said. “It definitely was a team effort today.”

In the second half the Trojans were able to take their starters out in the beginning of the third and let everyone play.

The coach said 11 of the 12 kids scored.

Sabin Chaidez went down in the third quarter with an injury. Hopkins said he hopes it’s not to serious. Chaidez is a guard and has some speed.

The PVT wishes her a speedy recovery and hopes to see her back on the court.

The Lady Trojans are away against Boulder City (3-4, Sunrise League) tonight at 5 p.m.
