Lady Trojans volleyball and coach receive high honors

Sunset League volleyball coaches honored Trojans longtime head volleyball Jill Harris and named her Sunset League coach of the year for this year’s playoff appearances and won the league with a 10-0 Sunset League record and a 23-14 record overall.

The veteran coach has been coaching for more than 15 years with the Trojans.

She said she’s not sure how long because she had taken a break somewhere in those years. The coach has a knack for making sure each year that her team has the fundamentals of volleyball to be competitive, whatever the talent pool.

Trojans athletic director Larry Goins had nothing but positive accolades for his veteran coach.

“Coach Harris is the epitome of a veteran coach in today’s world of education-based athletics,” Goins said. “She is the best at drawing from her many experiences and the old hard-nosed coach stereotype and the current trend of working with players that don’t except criticism and want only to have to deal with success.”

He said despite her high expectations from all players, she deals with each of them individually and finds what motivates each of them and how far they can be pushed.

“She has adapted to changing times and as a result the players love playing for her,” Goins added. “Her success is a testament to her abilities. Pahrump Valley High School is very fortunate to have her on our coaching staff.”

In addition to the coach, the players also came away with honors. Senior Alexis Trieb was named to the All-State first team for 3A. Seniors Koral Hearn and Jill Smith were named to the All-State second team and all three were named to the first team All-Southern Region team. Bethany Calvert was named to the All-Southern Region second team.

Trieb, Hearn, Calvert and Smith were All-Sunset League first team and Isabelle Meza, Jackie Stobbe and Maddie Hansen were All-Sunset League second team.
