Trojans golf earns a team berth at regional tourney

On Monday, the Faith Lutheran Crusaders golf team shot a 394 for a first place finish in the Sunset League match at Canyon Gate with Pahrump coming in second with a 455.

Last week at Angel Park Faith shot a 396 for another first place. Pahrump finished with a 433 at Angel Park for another second place.

The top golfer at Canyon Gate was Mitch Conley of Faith, who shot a 2-over par for a 74 and for Pahrump Derek Moore carded an 81.

At Angel Park, Dallas Haun and A.J. Johnson each shot 5-over 76 to help Faith Lutheran with the win. The Crusaders will cruise into the regional tournament, which will start next week.

According to Trojans Coach Bob Hopkins, the latest matches gave the Trojans an average far below the 450 needed to enter the regional tournament as a team.

At Canyon Gate, Kyle Steib shot an 82, Austen Ancell shot a 85, Derek Moore shot a 81, Branden Hastings also shot a 109, Kelby Lindberg a 103 and Mike Hildebrand a 104. Austen Ancell did better at Angel park with a 78.

Hopkins said after Angel Park his team scores have been coming down and he is happy with the team effort.

“Branden came within 1 stroke of his best score of the year and Kelby was his low for the year. Derek didn’t play like he is capable of, but he will get back in form on Monday I’m sure. Kyle shot just about where he has shot most of the year,” Hopkins said.

The Trojans will attend the regional tournament on May 12 at Primm. The second day will be at Wild Horse.
