Big 5 plans to hold a grand opening Sept. 18

Big 5 Sporting Goods is scheduled to open its newest location in Pahrump on September 18, 2014. The 10,000-square-foot, full-line sporting goods store is located at 2171 E. Carlton St. and will provide about 25 new jobs.

The company held a hiring event at NyE Communities Coalition Campus through that organization’s career connections program Aug. 12.

Tim Wigchers, NyECC’s programs director said originally Big 5 was only open to interview 100 job seekers in two interview sessions of 50 each. “We filled those slots in about two days and Big 5 gave permission to open 25 more slots for each session and Wigchers said those slots filled as well.

“Job seekers began lining up at our doors at 6 a.m. this morning,” Wigchers said.

All together Big 5 human resources interviewers saw 181 job seekers. Everyone who showed up was granted an interview.

“Anyone who is hired will know by this evening,” Wigchers said. “The company will again use this facility to process the new hires for their jobs.”

The number of new employees increased. Wigchers said 26 people were offered employment and a “few manager trainee positions will continue to be interviewd over the next day or two (by Friday).”

The store’s building is almost ready for occupancy and Carlton Street was paved Aug. 9.

A Big 5 corporate press release set the opening date for Sept. 18 and will feature three consecutive daily giveaways to the first 100 customers through Saturday, Sept. 20.

Special sale prices, free raffles and an enter-to-win promotion will be included throughout the three-day event.

Big 5 Sporting Goods is a full-line sporting goods store that offers name brand sports equipment, apparel, and athletic shoes for the entire family.

Steve Miller, the President and Chief Executive Officer stated, “We are very excited about becoming a part of Pahrump’s growing and energetic market and believe that our 59 years of experience in the sporting goods business will enable us to successfully fulfill the needs of sports enthusiasts in this community.”
