Bob Beckett pleaded no contest Oct. 15 in the Pahrump Justice Court and will resign as district attorney of Nye County at the end of this month, as a condition of a plea deal.
The possible charges against Beckett for allegedly mishandling the county’s Bad Check Program were negotiated down to a single misdemeanor for interfering with a public official. The charge stems from numerous delays in submitting the program’s financial records to the treasurer’s office.
During the hearing, Special Prosecutor Peter S. Christiansen said the $20,000 in salary and benefits recouped by the county for the DA resigning his job a month before his term is up will be used in lieu of any other monies that might be paid back in restitution.
As for his Sept. 7 arrest for drunken driving, Beckett must complete alcohol counseling to the court’s satisfaction.
The negotiated plea bargain will be submitted in writing to North Las Vegas Justice of the Peace Stephen Dahl, who was appointed to hear the case in place of local judges who worked with Beckett throughout his tenure as DA.
Judge Dahl accepted the no contest guilty plea and if Beckett completes the requirements of the deal, the misdemeanor charge will be dismissed.
A status check is scheduled for the two cases at 2 p.m., Jan. 21, 2011.
The four-term district attorney finished last in a field of five candidates in the primary elections and will be replaced by either Democrat Brian Kunzi or Republican Ron Kent in January.

The assemblyman story is being worked on, but you seem to know a lot about it. How?
I think Bob knew he wouldn’t get a harsh punishment. That’s why he kept on doing what he did! I got hit and run over when I was 19. The driver was on drugs and drunk. Needless, to say I have No use for drunks/drug addicts and No sympathy. Bob was lucky he didn’t maim or kill anyone.
( a quote from the Las Vegas Review Journal)
“In the end, DeMeo said, Beckett didn’t even apologize for his actions. The only statement the longtime prosecutor made in court was that he understood the terms of his plea”
That’s sad for detective who Beckett put through hell. I guess that’s how self-centered people act, without a conscience.
Y’all got a funny way of doin things there. I thought Texas was bad!
yes they do and i thought it was bad here in oregon…..this could be a best seller
And so – Pahrump once again shows why it is the laughing stock of the known universe. How can anyone involved in this deal think this makes the DA’s office in Pahrump, Nye County, Nevada, look any better? This is an insult to the judicial system. Everyone in the DA’s office should be fired – clean house – start over. It has been said the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree – well the tree is down now, so let’s get rid of all the rotten apples associated with that tree. I wonder how much “influence” will come into play with the probation violation in California? He’ll probably skate on that as well. What is also sad, the number of lives these bozos in the DA’s office have destroyed. Beckett was quoted as saying he was going to have to find a job after this…..does he realize that most employers do background checks these days? Does he realize his name has been plastered all over the internet? Does he realize this debacle has been published in the Wall Street Journal? I wonder where in the known universe the man caught in the middle of this mess will find another job?
Any other small town in this country would NOT tolerate all this crap going on. Yes no wonder Pahrump is such a joke to others around the country.
I agree with Living in Pahrump. Just think of how many lives that man has ruined and how many others will not find work due to charges filed against them. This is just payback for the life he lived. He will now walk a mile in others shoes and walk many miles in his own trying to find employment. And when he can’t, then we can all say how shiftless and lazy he is. Not that the system has crippled these people maybe for the rest of their lives.
Once again a pat on the ass and sent on his way, gee no big surprise sadly.

A precedent setting case if ever there were!
What do you mean moneys recouped will go toward his restitution? No money. He resigned. No more pay. He must be made to pay it back himself, not with tax payer money.
Sick of the double standards for Nye counties supposed finest and the citizens of Nye County. I have lived in Pahrump for a very long time and have seen a lot of unfair justice going on. Its all who you know or where you work.
So we get rid of one drunken county official with another one in line trying for his job. Seems like it never ends.
Ha Well you are right other communities do laugh at Pahrump. Almost like reading the comics from the morning paper. And I agree with the person who stated to clean house in the DA’s office. Fire them all. You can’t tell me that not one person there thought something was fishy. And if they did and just didn’t say anything, then thats part of a problem. Integrity is a very strong word. You don’t close your eyes when you see or feel something is wrong. You open your mouth and say something. If its all corrupt then there are people up the ladder that you go to. I think there should be an internal investigation on all people that work for the county. Then maybe they can clean up the mess. How about the assessors office, recorders office, office of taxation, courts, judges, any and all offices. I bet you would see people resigning left and right. Ha Glad I am not calling Pahrump my home any longer. Good luck people. At least I can read about your town and get a good laugh before work.
