As I traveled across the Eastern seaboard on my vacation last week, I met many people who didn’t know me but wanted to talk to me because I was wearing a 49ers jacket. I was in Boston and New York with my wife for a friend’s wedding and all that I came in contact with would remark about the Niners and the Patriots not making the Super Bowl. The conversation would normally end in pleasantries and a good recommendation to either eat or a place to visit. I guess you can say it was an “ice breaker.”
In part one of this series on Wednesday, we heard Athletic Director of Pahranagat Valley, Brad Loveday, talks about a system he helped put in place. This system has brought nothing but consistency and oodles of state titles to the school.
There has been a lot of talk about changes coming to the 1-A because of the recent fall success of Faith Lutheran High School. The school captured its first state titles in volleyball and football.
Pahranagat Valley has been a perennial leader in state titles for the last 20 years. Its teams have won so many Division 4 titles that other schools seek to copy them. Just in football alone they have won six straight titles in a row and they have won 16 state titles since 1978. They have 14 state titles in boys basketball since 1950 and 15 state titles in girls volleyball since 1985.
In nearly two full days of wrestling last Friday and Saturday (Feb 14-15), the Trojans varsity wrestlers placed first over the other five teams in the Sunset conference and all of the 6 teams of the Sunrise conference, giving them the title of first in the Southern Nevada Region. Their victory was resounding and decisive, with a total Trojans team score of 275 points, versus the number two school, Virgin Valley, at 189 points and Boulder City at 154 points.
Another week in sports is gone and we have just 29 Sundays left until another football season starts. Not that I am counting — or anything.
Last Friday the Tonopah Muckers men’s basketball team traveled to Las Vegas to face the Adelson School Lions, leader of the Division 4 Southern League, and lost 67-45.
President of the Mountain Falls Ladies Golf Association, Dee Trimble, gathered her association last Friday to present two lifetime achievement awards to Lucille Koenig and Jonna West.
