TONOPAH — A retired Nye County Sheriff’s sergeant who traveled the nation has parked his RV in Tonopah once again to coach the Muckers baseball team.
The time of hunting and fishing conventions has come to an end and the hunting guides-outfitters have returned home to prepare for another season. I’m left with my head full of new stories and my sides still aching from laughing at the crazy tales and humorous, if sometimes dangerous, adventures we’ve shared at vendor booths, in the hallways, hotel rooms and yes, while sipping a beverage in the local “watering holes.”
Six competitive horseshoe pitchers met in a Nevada town with roughly 2,000 residents and home of the Clown Motel, which is next to a cemetery that dates back to 1901 in Tonopah.
The defending state champion Pahrump Valley baseball weren’t able to bring home another title this season, but three standouts for the Trojans ranked in the top 100 players in the 3A division for their batting averages.
Junior Luis Flores could be the next Beatty Hornet quarterback. He has played with senior quarterback Jake Zamora in three sports. Flores and Zamora have known each other since the second grade. Each knows how the other plays the game. Flores said the two compete against each other and make themselves even better, so when Zamora was out with a bad ankle against Pahranagat Valley, Flores had no problem stepping in for him.
It was a great weekend for Lady Muckers’ volleyball, as both junior varsity and varsity were able to defeat their opponents. The girls won their league game against Round Mountain away and also an additional friendly game against Sierra Lutheran at home.
The Pahrump Fall Festival Rodeo was a success. Rodeo fans packed McCullough Arena, according to event volunteer “Cowboy” Ken Pyle.
The rodeo is in town for two days of the Pahrump Fall Festival, Friday and Saturday. The Colorado-based Rocky Mountain Professional Rodeo Association is the same rodeo as last year.
Volleyball is all about playing as hard as you can, taking your lickings and moving on to the next opponent. This is especially true when the perennial champions, the Pahranagat Valley Panthers come roaring in to Beatty.
The biggest weekend of the year is here and as the town readies itself for the Pahrump Fall Festival, the Pahrump Valley Speedway prepares for the biggest race of the year.
If you want to see great art, you go to the Louvre in Paris, but if you want to see great soccer, Pahrump is the town for you. The Lady Trojans posted their sixth win of the season beating the Mojave Rattlers 12-0 and improved to 6-0-1 on the year and 3-0 in league.
The Lady Trojans played three straight days of volleyball in a row.
The Sandy Valley Sidewinders aren’t the roll-over team from last year and gave the Muckers a run for their money. The Sidewinders volleyball team visited Tonopah last week on Friday and were 2-0 going into the meet with some major improvements offensively since last year. They easily beat Beaver Dam 3-0 and then beat Adelson school, 3-0, too.
The Tonopah Muckers won their first league game beating the Sandy Valley Sidewinders 26-22 at home on Friday. Matt Misener had a late touchdown, and scored on a 14-yard run with 15 seconds left before the end of the game.
