TONOPAH — A retired Nye County Sheriff’s sergeant who traveled the nation has parked his RV in Tonopah once again to coach the Muckers baseball team.
The time of hunting and fishing conventions has come to an end and the hunting guides-outfitters have returned home to prepare for another season. I’m left with my head full of new stories and my sides still aching from laughing at the crazy tales and humorous, if sometimes dangerous, adventures we’ve shared at vendor booths, in the hallways, hotel rooms and yes, while sipping a beverage in the local “watering holes.”
Six competitive horseshoe pitchers met in a Nevada town with roughly 2,000 residents and home of the Clown Motel, which is next to a cemetery that dates back to 1901 in Tonopah.
The defending state champion Pahrump Valley baseball weren’t able to bring home another title this season, but three standouts for the Trojans ranked in the top 100 players in the 3A division for their batting averages.
The Muckers gave it their all on the field to achieve last Friday’s victory against the Spring Mountain Eagles 46-40 (0-12, 12-18, 24-34 and 46-40), in a heroic comeback, with Connor Friel’s touchdown at three minutes left in the game.

To truly understand the Trojans men’s soccer team, one must look at their last four games. The Trojans had to do something about their defense. It was bleeding points. The team had given up 12 in the two games prior to the Western game on Thursday. They dropped two games in a row to Mojave and Clark. Trojans Coach Don Boulden said after the Clark game the defense was going to have to change and they had one day to do it.
Senior Matt Misener is a running back for the Tonopah Muckers. Misener’s running game has been responsible for breaking a few games wide open. He is 5 feet 9 inches tall and 165 pounds, and runs the 40-yard dash in 4.5 seconds. He is quick and lethal, but most importantly he has heart.
The Tonopah Muckers football team won Friday’s away conference game against Round Mountain by a score of 58-26. With this win, Tonopah improves to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in league. The offense is averaging 345.6 yards rushing per game, 117 yards passing per game and has a total of 26 TDs.
The Lady Trojans went 2-1 in their last three outings. They beat Mojave last Thursday 3-0, lost to Clark on Monday 3-1 and beat Western on Wednesday 3-1.
Beatty Hornets football team soundly beat Beaver Dam last Friday night 43-36. Hornets Coach Leo Verzilli said his team had a great game.
Trojans cross country lost to Faith Lutheran at Indian Springs some weeks back. Since then the boys and girls seemed to have shrugged off the loss and moved on.
