The year in sports in review, part I

This year, more than others, is about change in people rather than events. Sure, there were some events worth mentioning, but for the most part, 2016 was a year of people coming and going more than anything else. The PVT looks at 2016 sports in two parts, with the second part coming out in Friday’s issue.

Demand outpaces supply for Christmas dinners

More than 1,000 meals were prepared and served for the NyE Communities Coalition’s annual free Christmas dinner on Sunday as volunteer servers kept the meals flowing to a packed house. Approximately 500 of the meals were used for homebound deliveries. The coalition had to purchase 19 additional meals from Denny’s to feed all the home requests from seniors.

Energy secretary nominee Rick Perry mum on Yucca Mountain

President-elect Donald Trump’s pick as energy secretary, Rick Perry, is not saying whether he intends to push for a revival of plans to entomb the nation’s highly radioactive waste at Nevada’s Yucca Mountain.

The Kenny Guinn Center for Policy Priorities is a research organization that works to inform the public on issues that confront the state. It is relatively new, and 2016 was the first election in which it had a prominent role. Much of its work was useful. It could have been better.

The Lady Trojans basketball team edged Boulder City in the final seconds of the road game 27-26 in a non-league win.

Gary J. Miller is a senior Pahrump weightlifter who has 48 world records at that level and for his age group. At the end of November, he set some of those records at the age of 65. He competes in the 146-pound division.

Residents warned about mountain lions active in town

Recent mountain lion sightings have prompted the Nye County Sheriff’s Office and Animal Control to issue a warning to residents on the north and south end of the valley.
