PV Winery begins expansion

While other businesses in the valley are fighting to ride out a slowly recovering recession, Pahrump Valley Winery is set to begin construction on phase one of its expansion with work scheduled to begin in November.

Deadline to apply for Brownfield’s classes Oct. 18

NyE Communities Coalition graduated its first group of students who took advantage of the recent job skills classes offered through an almost $200,000 Brownfields grant. The classes began in August and of the 28 people who qualified to enroll in the classes, 22 graduated with eight either state or federal certifications, which will aid them when seeking employment.

Can a democracy exist as a permanent form of government? As you may have read, a democracy can exist only until the voters discover they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising them the most benefits from the public treasury. The result is that democracies always collapse over a loss of fiscal responsibility and is always followed by a dictatorship.

With just 7.5 seconds remaining in the game, the Trojans came from behind and scored the winning touchdown against the Clark Chargers. Trojans won the game 25-22.

Girls golf team continues to improve

Last week the girls golf team was at Las Vegas Municipal and on Monday they were at Angel Park Golf Course. According to Trojans Coach Julie Floyd, the team did very well, and is improving each game. The girls came in third place each time but the scores got a little better at each match.

Hard-working player seeks top spot on the field and off

Junior Luis Flores could be the next Beatty Hornet quarterback. He has played with senior quarterback Jake Zamora in three sports. Flores and Zamora have known each other since the second grade. Each knows how the other plays the game. Flores said the two compete against each other and make themselves even better, so when Zamora was out with a bad ankle against Pahranagat Valley, Flores had no problem stepping in for him.

It was a great weekend for Lady Muckers’ volleyball, as both junior varsity and varsity were able to defeat their opponents. The girls won their league game against Round Mountain away and also an additional friendly game against Sierra Lutheran at home.

Half-cent sales tax resurrected

TONOPAH — Nye County commissioners Tuesday voted 3-2 to increase the sales tax one-half percent from 7.1 percent to 7.6 percent, though commission Chairman Butch Borasky said he wants a future ballot question on the matter to let voters decide whether to allow the tax to end on Dec. 31, 2015.
