After sitting out the first six weeks of wrestling season, Pahrump Valley High School junior 120-pounder Donnie Miller was eager to get back on the mat.

Last Thursday night, the Pahrump Valley High School girls basketball team headed into Las Vegas to play Del Sol and came back with a 43-13 victory.

At the close of Monday night’s games, the Del Sol, Boulder City and Democracy Prep boys basketball teams combined sported a 34-14 record. So it should not have come as a surprise that Pahrump Valley would struggle during a three-game stretch against them.

Coach Dan Clift knows his Pahrump Valley High School boys basketball team doesn’t have much margin for error against the better teams on the schedule. Take away one of the starters — especially one who stands 6 feet, 4 inches — and the Trojans are in some trouble.

Many Americans first became aware of curling during the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea, when the United States won its first gold medal in the sport. The event certainly had an impact on the Las Vegas Curling Club.

It might not have been pretty, but it was good enough for the Pahrump Valley High School girls basketball team.

Through three games at the Las Vegas Invitational, the Pahrump Valley boys basketball team had not needed a clutch performance. But after winning by 27, losing by 22 and losing by 31, the Trojans found themselves in an overtime dogfight with Nuview Bridge.

Perhaps the bleakest point of the Pahrump Valley girls basketball team’s season was quickly followed by some of its best moments.

Back in 1992, when Bill Clinton was running for president, he was fond of telling voters, “When you buy one, you get two,” in reference to his wife, who is at least as smart as he is, if not as politically astute.

For 16 minutes Wednesday, the Pahrump Valley boys basketball team played as if it had yet to recover from over-celebrating New Year’s Eve, managing just 5 second-quarter points and going into halftime, trailing a 1-10 Mountain View Christian team, 19-14.
