Down 4-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh, a bases-loaded opportunity arose once more for Pahrump Valley senior Jack Walker, who walked-off his opponents for the second time this season.
Lee Cortez is the newest Pahrump Valley High School Booster Club president who will be taking over for Denise Arceo. Arceo ran the club for two years and said she left the boosters to travel more with her family.
A select few of the Trojans track team went to the Las Vegas Classic at Desert Oasis High School last Saturday. Trojans Coach Ed Kirkwood said not too many Division 1-A schools went because of the level of competition. He said the Classic only took the top 18 in each event. To medal at the invitational, the athletes had to finish in the top four. There were 25 teams at the meet, 17 Division I teams and eight Division I-A teams.
The Lady Trojans bats went silent against the Cheyenne Desert Shields in their second home game and first league game in a 2-1 loss.
The game couldn’t have had a more fitting ending, a walk-off single to give the Trojans a 2-1 victory over the visiting club, the Cheyenne Desert Shields.
The Trojans track squads were both at Desert Pines competing in a new format for the division on Tuesday. Normally two teams face off in a dual meet and there might be a non-league team there who might need some practice.
Beatty High School baseball is underway. The first game was a learning game against the Pahrump Valley Trojans junior varsity team where the Hornets lost 15-3.
The Beatty Track team appears to have started where they left off last spring. Beatty is the defending Division IV state champion and this year Hornets Coach Jerry Adcox has returned with nearly 50 team members.
Baseball players are the most superstitious of all the athletes and when the luck runs out, it gets ugly. For Brian Hayes and the Trojans baseball season, the mojo had been running dry until the last weekend and all of a sudden the team was knee-deep in luck.
Once in while a coach will look at his talent and just nod his head and say, “It’s going to be OK.” Trojans Coach Ed Kirkwood was that coach and was pleased with what his team accomplished for the first meet of the season, despite some setbacks.
Everything is relative. About last year at the River Valley tourney at the start of the season, Trojans Coach Brian Hayes complained that his team was averaging about 11 errors a game and he said the team needed to cut errors. This year the team started around 4 errors a game. The coach still says his team needs to cut errors as his expectations have changed.
